Tyre Basics

In recent years many countries have made enormous additions to their legislation on road vehicle safety. More and more standards for minimum acceptable levels of performance have been established covering almost every component that affects vehicle safety and these have inevitably included tyres. Since any components conforming to such standards have to be identified they need to be marked on the tyres; the only place where such markings can be placed is on the sidewall.

Fortunately international co-operation has led to a fair degree of standardisation between groups of countries to avoid the even greater degree of complexity if each country applied its own standards.

Follow the six links to guide you through the information available on understanding the tyre sidewall markings. This should provide you with enough information to help you make the best choice for your car.
