Tyre Wear

My Volvo garage say I need to replace tyres on my 13 month old Volvo with less than 6000 miles. They recorded the tread depth as 5..5 across the two front tyres. Am I being scammed or has the quality of tyres gone down. I got 40000 miles out of my tyres on my old Volvo.

I've driven just over 120k miles in this car now. I've tried Pirellis, Continental and Dunlop, and this is my second time wth Michelin's. I've found these have the best mileage, and the main reason is they are the only ones I've found which wear evenly across the tread. The others all wore unevenly meaning I couldn't make full use of the tread available. They were slightly more expensive but I believe possibly the best tyres you can get for this car. Grip in all weathers has been good and they are quiet on the road.
